The Curiosity Gap

Ever clicked a headline you HAD to know more about—even though you had zero intention of doing so 30 seconds earlier? That’s the curiosity gap in action.

The Research

In 2024 a study on consumer behavior from Purdue University showed that content intentionally designed to spark audience curiosity increased user engagement by a whopping 41%.

A few months later, a study published in The International Journal of Consumer Studies found that when consumers feel curious we become more receptive to new information.

Why It Works

curiosity creates a tension

It's a space between what we know now and what we want to know next. An irresistible “just tell me already” itch that gets us clicking, reading—and buying.

Why It Matters

intrigue inspires investment

Curiosity isn’t just about grabbing attention. It’s a powerful emotion that leads us to actively seek out (and buy-into) new information & ideas.

It comes down to how our brains handle uncertainty
Here's the secret ...

Think: Open Loops

A 2022 study in the Journal of Consumer Research showed that curiosity creates a psychological itch—we NEED to know the answer. When an intriguing tension is present, our brains become hyper-focused on resolving it.

That’s why open loops (“Guess what?!…”), meaningful questions, and strategic teasers work so well. They give the brain a mystery it feels compelled to solve.

However

There's a catch ...

You Have to Pay it Off

Use Open Loops But Always Follow Through: When you create a curiosity gap—like a headline that says, “The mistake 87% of business owners make on their homepage”—you’re creating an open loop. The reader has to know what that mistake is.

To “pay it off” means: you actually give them the answer. You don’t tease, dodge, or disappoint. You keep your promise.

If you spark curiosity but never close the loop, people feel tricked—which erodes trust fast. Always pay it off and your audience learns: “When I click or open something from you, I get real answers. You’re worth my attention.”

That's EXACTLY what we want them to think and feel.

Prompt #1: Play with paradox to stand out.

Statements that sound contradictory (“The less you post, the more you sell”) invite mental friction—and that’s a good thing. It triggers curiosity because the brain wants to resolve the tension. Paradox headlines make people pause, squint, and click.

Ask ChatGPT: “Can you brainstorm 5 curiosity-based headlines or captions using paradox or surprise for my [workshop/course/offer]?”

Prompt #2: Design an irresistible curiosity gap.

Ask yourself: What’s the one question my audience is dying to have answered—but doesn’t even know how to ask yet? That’s where the magic happens. Use that question as the hook in your caption or slide one of your Canva carousel.

Ask ChatGPT: “Based on my offer [brief description], what are 5 curiosity-driven questions I can use as hooks for a social carousel post that tease a result or insight—but leave just enough information out to make people click to slide 2?”

Prompt #3: Reframe your FAQ as a curiosity engine.

Instead of answering questions with flat, literal responses, use the question itself to create intrigue. (Think: “Can your homepage copy actually cost you sales?” instead of “What makes good homepage copy?”) Your audience doesn’t just want answers—they want mysteries that matter.

Ask ChatGPT: “Can you help me reframe my FAQ section with curiosity-based questions that tap into real audience pain points and spark engagement?”

3 Quick Questions

Before You Hit Publish:

Open a Loop

Is my content creating a knowledge gap, to make my audience realize there’s something they don’t know—but REALLY want to?

Meaningful Intrigue

Does this content tease or hint about something that matters to them, connected to their aspirations, frustrations, or identity?

Always Pay it Off

Did I follow through (or make a plan) to “pay it off” by actually giving them the answer I teased? (Note to self: closing the loop is about building trust)
